In 1975, Lucy Mackall and her company, Lucy’s Canvas, attracted the attention of the Rouse Company, then developing Boston’s Faneuil Hall Marketplace. She opened a Lucy’s Canvas store in August 1976, one of only a handful of specialty retailers in Faneuil Hall at its inception.

From her roots in Boston’s Faneuil Hall Marketplace, Lucy went on to expand her business through not only Lucy’s Canvas stores, but developed other themed specialty stores including Have A Heart gift stores, and From the Heart of stores which celebrated a particular city on a wide range of products.

In 1981, Lucy originated and developed “Lucy’s Laces” – imprinted shoelaces with vibrant, distinctive, whimsical designs. “Lucy’s Laces” grew rapidly into a large national wholesale business. Ms. Mackall and “Lucy’s Laces” were the subject of articles in People and Fortune magazines.

Al Shameklis joined Lucy and the company in 1985. Al was a Certified Public Accountant with Arthur Andersen & Co., specializing in retail and commercial clients. Al brought a solid understanding of systems, internal controls and operating procedures to Lucy’s various entrepreneurial activities, and a successful working partnership was quickly formed.

The company was renamed Color, Inc. and the successful expansion quickly began. Today Color, Inc. operates almost fifty stores nationwide!
